The very ancient practice of trenodìa (ritual crying) was common in Southern Italy until a few years ago. Dedicated not only to death, but to various social crises, it had a repairing and regenerating function for the community. In 2019, the brothers Mariangela and Vinicio Capossela propose an update of this practice by extending it to the broader concept of “cultural death”, staging for ten days a traveling public art performance, with the active participation of the citizens of eight countries and three regions. Between painting, music and ritual, the film poetically tells the story of the processions between timeless landscapes, from the coast of Calabria to the Sassi of Matera.
